Child traffickers arrested in Ondo

Two suspected members of a child trafficking syndicate have been apprehended in Ondo State.

The duo were arrested by Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC, in the South West State.

The suspects are identified as Babatunde Oluwasola, also known as ‘Osanle’, 57, and Fowowe Dada, 47.

Their arrest followed a report of a missing girl who was later discovered to have been trafficked to Libya.

The State Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC, Daniel Aidamenbor, made the disclosure on Monday.

He stated investigations revealed that Oluwasola and Dada collaborated in the transportation of three girls from Akure to Libya in April 2023.

Aidamenbor further disclosed that one of the suspects, Oluwasola, together with Dada and an individual known as Iya Alaso, facilitated the transportation of one of the girls to Libya.

“The victims who embarked on a journey through the desert to Libya contacted Mr. Babatunde via an agent two weeks after leaving Akure, Ondo State, to inform him of their arrival in Libya.

“The victim, a 15-year-old girl who resided with her parents in Akure, had left without informing anyone about her intended journey.

“Upon reaching Libya, she realised that the circumstances she found herself in were not as expected. Consequently, she reached out to her father, who had been searching for her.

“She pleaded with her father for assistance, prompting him to report the matter to the NSCDC (Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps), Ondo State Command.

“The suspects have already provided confessions, and once our investigation is complete, the case will be transferred to NAPTIP (National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons) for further action.”
