Gunmen kill Katsina councilor

Police begin probe

Armed men suspected to be bandits wreaking havoc in Nigeria’s northwest region have killed a councillor in Katsina state.

Samaila Mairago was shot dead by the gunmen on Monday night in his house located at Nasarawa Quarters, Funtua.

Mairago was a councillor in the Funtua Local Government Area of the state.

Locals said he was the councillor representing Nasarawa Ward of the local government.

The Katsina State Police Command on Tuesday said it had commenced an investigation into the murder.

It was learnt that the gunmen stormed the town on Monday night and headed for his residence.

The late councillor was reportedly shot dead in his residence.

It could not be ascertained whether the gunmen carted away any of his property after the attack.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Abubakar Aliyu, confirmed the incident, adding that an investigation had already begun on the incident.

He, however, said no arrest had been made as of Tuesday morning.

“We have commenced an investigation into the incident. No arrest has been made so far but we shall keep you posted as the investigation progresses,” Aliyu said
