- The Olowu of Owu encouraged individuals to take action in creating jobs and reducing poverty and crime in society
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo emphasized yesterday the importance of the government encouraging local manufacturers and entrepreneurs as part of efforts to reduce imports.
He made the remarks in Abeokuta, Ogun State, while delivering a keynote address titled “SME’s Key Role in Manufacturing and Import Substitution,” at the unveiling of the Luxe Regal Brand of Royal Chairs by the Olatunde Prestige Limited.
Tunde Ebidero’s book, “Your Business as a Ministry: Developing a Kingdom-centered Perspective to Your Work,” was also launched at the event.
Obasanjo, who was represented by his wife, Mrs Bola Obasanjo, emphasized the significance of the manufacturing sector in developing the economy and empowering the country’s teeming youths.
He praised the company for breaking new ground in the industry and employing young people.
“By helping the people, you have served humanity,” he declared.
“We all know that the government can’t do it alone,” said the Olowu of Owu, Oba (Prof.) Saka Matemilola, during the program. Enough with the blaming the government. Let us, like Pastor Ebidero, consider what we can do to make a difference. We should all consider what we can do to help the government create jobs and thus reduce poverty and crime in our society.”
Ebidero stated that he had closed his importation business and had resorted to local chair manufacturing.
He claimed that within a few years of opening, he had discouraged importation, contributed to the local economy, and employed approximately 1,000 youths.
