- Police deny the alleged kidnapping of Prof. Cyril Ndifon, stating he was picked up by government security agents, not abducted
- Police urge the public to disregard social media rumors and promise to investigate the source of the false information
Police in Cross River debunked the alleged kidnapping of Prof. Cyril Ndifon, suspended Professor of Law and Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Calabar.
SP Irene Ugbo, a police spokesperson in Calabar, stated that Ndifon was not kidnapped but was picked up by government security agents.
She observed that the rumoured abduction was intended to cause panic.
Police hereby state that Prof. Ndifon was not kidnapped, as previously reported, but was arrested by a government security agency for questioning.”
Police also advise members of the public to disregard information about the alleged abduction on social media platforms because it is subversive.”
It is deceptive and a calculated attempt to cause panic or a breach of the state’s peace, Ugbo said.
She promised that the police would track down the source of the “obnoxious rumour.”
The professor’s son, David Ndifon, had previously told newsmen that gunmen had invaded their home in Akpabuyo, Cross River, and fired sporadically before taking the professor away.
He stated that the incident occurred between 11 p.m. on Wednesday and the early hours of Thursday.
“We’ve been doing everything we can and making the necessary calls to ensure his safe return,” David said.
Ndifon was suspended by the university following allegations of sexual harassment of students, among other things.
Sexual Harassment Allegation: UniCal Panel Submits Report
Prof. Florence Obi, Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, has formally received the investigative panel report formed to investigate allegations of impropriety levelled against Prof. Cyril Ndifon, suspended Dean of Law Faculty.
Obi, who received the report at a ceremony in her Calabar office, praised the panel for its efforts in producing a thorough and objective report in such a short period.
Students from the Faculty of Law, led by their president, staged a protest in the institution two months ago against Ndifon over several allegations, including sexual impropriety; an investigation panel was formed as a result.
The VC said that though the management had not gone through the report, she believed it would be useful to the university in achieving the needed closure.
