The Labour Party (LP) has emphasized its unwavering support for Senator Athan Achonu as the sole candidate of the ‘Obidients family’ in the upcoming Imo State governorship election, scheduled for November 11. Party members and loyalists have been urged to heed the directive issued by the presidential candidate of the party, Mr. Peter Obi, and other party leaders in supporting Achonu.
This statement was made during a joint press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, featuring Prince Kennedy Ahanotu, LP’s National Youth Leader; Dr. Tanko Yunusa, Chief spokesperson for Obi Datti Presidential Campaign Council; and Obiora Ifoh, LP’s National Publicity Secretary.
Highlighting the recent events, the speakers pointed out that a few weeks ago, the ‘Obedient family,’ led by its principal, Mr. Peter Obi, officially launched Senator Athan Achonu’s gubernatorial campaign in Owerri, the capital of Imo State. The event witnessed the presence of numerous party leaders, members of the National Working Committee (NWC), National Assembly members, stakeholders, and party supporters.
During this gathering, Mr. Peter Obi called on all ‘Obedient family’ members in Imo State to rally behind Senator Achonu, emphasizing that Achonu is the most qualified candidate, equipped with a comprehensive program tailored for the betterment of Imo residents. This program is designed to address issues such as hunger, insecurity, and unemployment, which have plagued the state under its current leadership.
Furthermore, the LP’s National Executive Council (NEC) has officially endorsed Senator Achonu as the party’s flagbearer. His candidacy has received the approval of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and various courts, including the Supreme Court, have recognized Senator Achonu’s eligibility.
The LP leaders acknowledged the existence of attempts by certain politicians to infiltrate the ‘Obedient family’ and pursue an ‘identity theft’ agenda. They encouraged party members and loyalists to remain steadfast in their support for Senator Achonu and to adhere to the directive issued by Mr. Peter Obi and other party leaders.
