- Dawodu, affirming the Green Chamber’s commitment to backing PLWDs in the nation, expressed his dedication to advancing their cause through his position
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has authorized the inclusion of a sign language interpreter during plenary and legislative proceedings to ensure justice and fairness.
Dr. Bashiru Dawodu, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Disability, emphasized that this initiative was aimed at supporting Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWDs).
Dawodu, affirming the Green Chamber’s commitment to backing PLWDs in the nation, expressed his dedication to advancing their cause through his position.
He conveyed these sentiments during a news conference jointly hosted by the National Democratic Institute and the Coalition of Organisations of Persons with Disabilities in Nigeria, operating under the banner of Accelerate Disability Inclusion in Emergencies Forum.
Additionally, he encouraged them to persistently advocate for their rights, emphasizing that these rights are not easily granted.
He added, “We have had some discussions with the Speaker and he has obliged us that for the first time, we will have sign language interpreters during plenary so that PLWDs in that category can understand deliberations in the House. I will vigorously pursue your recommendations because I agree with what you have said.”
At the event, the Senior Resident Director of the NDI, Kelley Jones, said she was aware of how much ADIE Forum members appreciate the support of the House of Representatives Committee on Disability.
She called on Nigerians to see the PLWDs rights as a national cause.
