- A protest in Morocco’s capital, Rabat, voiced strong solidarity with Palestinians, condemning Israeli actions in Gaza
- Fears grow as Israel’s blockade on Gaza continues, aid workers describe the situation as a catastrophe, and international responses unfold
A demonstration took place on Sunday at Muhammad V Square in Rabat, the capital of Morocco, to protest against Israeli forces’ killings of Palestinians in Gaza. The National Action Group for Palestine organized the rally, during which speakers emphasized their strong support for the Palestinian people.
On October 9, Israel imposed a “total blockade” on the Gaza Strip, preventing the entry of essential supplies, including food, water, medicine, fuel, and electricity. This blockade was initiated in response to the outbreak of the 2023 Israel-Hamas war, and attacks carried out in Israel by Hamas militants. Israel’s retaliatory offensive followed Hamas’s October 7 terrorist attacks, which claimed the lives of 1,300 people.
Fears for the safety of civilians in Gaza are growing as Israel indicates its readiness to escalate the conflict further. This includes the possibility of widespread strikes and “significant ground operations.”
A protester expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people, saying, “The protest is in solidarity with the Palestinian people. They have the right to live peacefully, and the world will not remain silent despite their suffering.”
Aid workers have described conditions in Gaza as a “complete catastrophe.” Thousands of Palestinians are attempting to flee the region, seeking safety amidst the escalating conflict.
International responses are also underway. The Pentagon in the United States has ordered the deployment of a second carrier strike group to the eastern Mediterranean, and Air Force fighter jets are being sent to the region. While these military assets are not intended to participate in Israel’s operations, their presence is meant to deter other potential actors, including Iran and Hezbollah, from entering the conflict.
Meanwhile, Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church, has appealed for establishing humanitarian corridors in Gaza and for the release of hostages held by Hamas. During an address at St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, he expressed his concern for the suffering of the people in the region and called for the release of prisoners.
Pope Francis stated, “I’m thinking of the many suffering people, the young and the elderly, and I renew my appeal to release the prisoners. Please respect the humanitarian situation in Gaza to ensure humanitarian corridors to help and assist the entire population.”
He expressed his deep sorrow over the situation in Israel and Palestine, urging an end to the violence. “Please may there be no more blood spilled—here or in any other place. Wars are always a defeat,” he said.
The international community closely monitors the situation in Gaza and seeks ways to address the crisis and promote peace.
