- The Commissioner of Police applied for the warrant to ensure Ajayi’s appearance before the court to address the allegations
An Akure Magistrate Court has issued a bench warrant for the former Ondo State deputy governor, Agboola Ajayi, in response to allegations of theft leveled against him.
The warrant stems from accusations of obtaining a brand new Toyota Camry valued at N5.4 million through false pretenses in May 2018.
The Commissioner of Police applied for the warrant to ensure Ajayi’s appearance before the court to address the allegations.
Following the application, the court directed Ajayi to either appear in court or provide a statement by November 24.
In a related case, two former aides of Agboola Ajayi, Ogunmusi Samuel and Akintoye Olatunji, were arraigned for their involvement with the allegedly stolen car from Segun Adetuwo, popularly known as Showboy.
Samuel, in his statement, revealed that he collected the Toyota Camry XLE from Adetuwo as instructed by the former deputy governor, but left without making any payment.
The court was informed by the prosecutor, Emmanuel Tanimowo, that Ajayi had not responded to the invitation to present his side of the incident.
Barrister Omolegbon Odunsola, representing Akintoye, mentioned efforts to contact Agboola and Adetuwo to explore a possible settlement outside of court.
Alex Olademehin, representing Adetuwo, noted that Agboola was given the option to provide a written statement to the police or appear in person before the court.
Presiding Magistrate Taiwo Lebi ordered Ajayi or his statement to be brought to court on the next adjournment date, set for November 24, 2023.
