The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has emphasized that its results viewing portal, IReV, is designed to enhance election transparency and is not a system for collating or transmitting election results.
This clarification was provided by the INEC director of ICT, Paul Omokore, during his presentation titled, “The role of BVAS, IReV for Bayelsa, Kogi, and Imo governorship elections” at a two-day capacity workshop for journalists in Akwanga, the headquarters of Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
Omokore urged journalists and the general public not to misconstrue the uploading of polling unit results to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) as an electronic transmission of results.
He explained that the INEC Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) is solely used for uploading images of polling unit results from form EC8A to IReV, and this process does not equate to electronic transmission of results.
He stated;
Form EC8A represents the results that were collated at the polling units. We utilize BVAS to capture images of this form and upload it to the IReV portal for public viewing. This is not a result collation system. It does not calculate or tally results. Its sole purpose is to capture the EC8A, which contains the results from the polling unit, as recorded by the presiding officers. These results are then signed, stamped, and transmitted as images to the IReV for public viewing. That is all it does. So, it is not a result collation system.
