- Lawan Kolo Geidam, Mandate Secretary of the ARDS, encourages tree planting in Abuja to combat climate change and urbanization’s effects
- Geidam visits FCT Plant Nursery to address the loss of tree cover due to urban development, highlighting the global concern of climate change
As part of a proactive strategy to combat the adverse effects of climate change, Lawan Kolo Geidam, the Mandate Secretary of the Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat (ARDS) within the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), has urged residents of Abuja to engage in tree planting initiatives actively.
During a visit to the FCT Plant Nursery in Bwari, Geidam emphasized the urgent need to address the significant loss of tree cover resulting from rapid urban development activities in the FCT.
He stated, “Climate change has emerged as a global concern, with its detrimental effects being felt worldwide. The FCT, like many other urban areas, has experienced the depletion of its green cover due to urbanization and developmental projects.”
The removal of trees not only contributes to the loss of biodiversity but also exacerbates climate change by intensifying urban heat and adversely impacting vegetation.
Geidam’s visit to the plant nursery was part of his ongoing familiarization tour of agricultural projects in the FCT. It further took him to the Bwari Fish Farm Estate, where he assured stakeholders of the Administration’s unwavering commitment and support for the project. This initiative signifies the FCTA’s dedication to addressing environmental concerns and fostering sustainable solutions to mitigate climate change.
