Abdulrasheed Bawa

The Department of State Services (DSS) has formally confirmed the release of the former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Abdulrasheed Bawa, after exactly 134 days spent in the custody of the secret police.

Dr Peter Afunanya, the Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications of the DSS, confirmed the release of Bawa in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

He said the former EFCC boss was released on Wednesday night but did not give details of the deal.

“DSS confirms release of former EFCC chairman Abdulrasheed, Bawa a few hours ago, today, Oct. 25,” he said.

WITHIN NIGERIA recalls that the former EFCC boss had been in the detention of the DSS since June 14 after his suspension by the Federal Government.

On the other side, last week Wednesday, the Senate confirmed the appointment of Ola Olukoyede as the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Mr Muhammad Hammajoda as the secretary of the anti-graft agency.

That was after the duo were cleared via a voice vote by senators at the plenary. The two nominees were screened and cleared by the senators at the Committee of the Whole after answering questions bordering on how they planned to make the anti-graft agency prevent corruption in the country.
