On Wednesday, the Senate strongly condemned the brutal killing of Chalya Silas, a dedicated serving Corps member, in Kaduna State.

The Senate, under the sponsorship of Senator Napoleon Bali (Plateau South), expressed deep sorrow regarding the tragic murder of the 24-year-old National Youth Service Corps member on October 18, 2023.

Silas, who was the only child of her widowed mother, tragically lost her life on October 18, 2023, when she was attacked by criminals during an early morning exercise in Kaduna while fulfilling her mandatory one-year service.

The motion also highlighted that Chalya was an enthusiastic member of the NYSC program hailing from Langtang-North Local Government area of Plateau State. She was filled with life and potential, actively participating in community development projects during her service in Kaduna State.

According to the Senate, her untimely demise at the age of 24 underscores the security challenges faced by our nation and serves as a stack reminder of the urgent need for improved security measures and safeguard the lives and aspirations of all citizens including vulnerable individuals like the NYSC members, whose safety in recent times has been threatened by various security challenges.”

The Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, who presided over plenary tasked the security agencies to strengthen the security system to forestall such occurrences.

He said, “The gruesome murder of a girl of just 24 years; we should not allow this kind of murder to continue happening in this country.

“It is therefore important that all our security agencies should be playing the roles they need to do to prevent this kind of murder from occurring on our land in the future.”
