- Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, appears to have sustained more severe injuries than initially thought.
- The NLC president’s planned protest rally in Owerri was turned violent after thugs attacked protesters and labor leaders, allegedly violating workers’ rights.
Following his injuries from being beaten up in Imo State on Thursday, Comrade Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), is scheduled to travel abroad for medical attention.
WITHIN NIGERIA recall that the labour leader was detained in Imo state on Wednesday which led to injuries on his face.
On Wednesday, November 1, the NLC president travelled to Owerri to organise Imo workers for a protest rally in the state over an alleged infringement and misuse of workers’ rights and privileges by the state government.
But according to reports, thugs broke out and attacked the demonstrators and union leaders, turning the otherwise peaceful demonstration violent.
The NLC president’s injuries from the altercation were too severe for treatment at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri, according to NLC press secretary Benson Upah, who made this statement to The Nation on Thursday.
