Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has placed an indefinite suspension on some members of the union for conducting elections into various posts of the national body of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD).
Details of the suspension was contained in a letter addressed to the concerned members and signed by General Secretary of NUPENG, Comrade Afolabi Olawale, a copy of which was made available to journalists on Friday.
The letter to the effect of the indefinite suspension reads in parts: “The national secretariat NUPENG is in receipt of documentary, audio and video evidences of you and some other individuals illegally organising and conducting elections for the national offices of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers Branch of the Union in Abuja, in the early hours of Tuesday, 3lst October 2023.
“This was in disobedience and in contempt of the judgement of Hon. Justice Bashar Alkali of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, in the Yenagoa Judicial Division, held at Yenagoa in Suit No. NICN/YEN/L/2022 which nullified the Petroleum Tanker Drivers Branch of NUPENG’s election held on 30th June 2022 in Ibadan, Oyo State, dissolved the former executive and mandated the National Secretariat of NUPENG to conduct fresh elections for the national offices of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) Branch of the union, pending when the National Executive Council of the Union shall take appropriate actions and measures on the matter.
The union, however, passed a vote of confidence in its Deputy President and General Secretary, noting that the national officers are discharging their duties satisfactorily.
NUPENG urged Nigerians to disregard any contrary information emanating from sources other than the recognised structure of PTD headed by the National Chairman, Comrade Augustine Egbon.
