The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has reassured Nigerians that the process of enrolling for the National Identification Number (NIN) is entirely free. Mrs. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, the Acting Director-General of NIMC, made this statement in Abuja and encouraged Nigerians to report any incidents of extortion or harassment that may occur during the enrollment process.
Coker-Odusote stated that the NIMC is aware of reports regarding certain Front End Partners (FEPs) who have allegedly been extorting money from the public in exchange for NIN enrollment. She emphasized that these partners are currently undergoing a revalidation process.
To address such incidents, she urged the public to contact NIMC through official channels, including the NIMC website, social media platforms, or the helpline, to report any such activities. These reports will assist in ensuring that the NIN enrollment process remains free and accessible to all Nigerians.
Furthermore, Coker-Odusote affirmed the NIMC’s commitment to its mission of providing a secure and universally recognized identity management system for Nigeria. She emphasized that the NIMC will not tolerate any form of extortion or harassment directed at citizens in enrollment centers.
The NIMC has a zero-tolerance policy for such misconduct and will take legal action against anyone found engaged in such activities. Coker-Odusote concluded by reiterating that such actions are not only unethical but also illegal.
