- The PDP calls on INEC to promptly transfer Imo State’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. Sylvia Agu, over alleged election compromise
- The party emphasizes the need to restore public confidence and ensure a credible election by reassigning Agu from Imo
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take a cue from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and promptly redeploy the Imo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. Sylvia Agu.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP called on INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to immediately transfer Prof. Sylvia Agu over allegations of compromising the integrity of the Saturday governorship election in Imo.
The PDP urged Yakubu to learn from the Inspector General of Police, who redeployed Commissioners of Police in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi in response to public demands for ensuring neutrality in the elections.
Ologunagba highlighted that the Chairman should heed the public outcry, petitions, and protests from the people of Imo, political parties, and civil society organizations for the removal of Agu due to her alleged compromise.
The party expressed the view that the people of Imo would not accept any electoral process with Agu as the REC, given her alleged involvement in the manipulation of the 2023 National and House of Assembly elections in Imo. They asserted that redeploying Agu from Imo is essential to restore public confidence in the electoral process, guarantee a credible election, and prevent potential crises in the state.
The PDP emphasized that the integrity of an election depends significantly on the electorate’s confidence in the electoral process and that Agu’s continued tenure as Imo REC is problematic and could lead to unrest.
Therefore, the PDP reiterated its demand for INEC Chairman to promptly reassign Agu out of Imo, aiming to restore the people’s confidence and maintain the integrity of the electoral process.
