The Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), Mrs. Oluwatoyin Madein, has urged accountants across the country to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) to stay relevant in the contemporary world. She made this statement during a health walk organized by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) Abuja and District Society, as part of the activities marking the International Accounting Day on November 10.
Madein emphasized the need for accountants to adapt to the changing landscape of the profession, moving beyond traditional roles of Debit and Credit Accountants. She encouraged them to embrace the evolving roles facilitated by AI.
The 59th ICAN President, represented by the 2nd Deputy Vice President ICAN, Hajiya Queensly Seghosime, highlighted the significant contribution of ICAN members, numbering over 60,000 across the country, as economic assets to Nigeria.
As part of the Abuja District Maiden Accounting week celebration, a seminar was held with two papers presented on the theme “The Changing Roles of Professional Accountants in the Era of Artificial Intelligence.” The presentations emphasized the importance of accountants acquiring both soft and advanced digital skills to effectively integrate AI into their work.
Prof. Ijeoma Adaji, an accountant and Professor of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia, Canada, emphasized that AI is here to stay, and accountants must adopt it to enhance their professional practices.
