20 UNICAL students reportedly Injured, hospitalised after exams stampede

Witnesses to the incident mentioned that the GSS examination was intended for 100-level students from all university faculties

Reports indicate that over 20 Nigerian students from the University of Calabar (UNICAL) have been hospitalized at the university’s teaching hospital after a stampede occurred in an examination hall on campus.

According to Sahara Reporters, while these reports haven’t been officially confirmed by the school authorities, the stampede occurred when new students rushed to secure seats for the General Studies and Communication Skills (GSS) examination on a Saturday.

Witnesses to the incident mentioned that the GSS examination, intended for 100-level students from all university faculties, was initially scheduled for Friday but had to be rescheduled to Saturday due to unforeseen circumstances.

The examination, one of the sources said, was meant to be taken in batches, but in an attempt by some students to secure space and be among first to sit for the examination, the rush led to the unfortunate incident.

The university started its second semester examination on October 16, 2023 and the GSS paper was the last examination to be taken.

Meanwhile, efforts to speak with the university management were unsuccessful as the public relations officer of the university could not be reached as of the time of filing this report.
