Reports emerged on Sunday of a tragic incident in Odiemerenyi community, Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State, where suspected cultists allegedly affiliated with a wanted kingpin, David Gift, reportedly attacked and claimed the lives of five individuals.
The assailants were purportedly part of the feared Iceland cult group led by Gift, also known as ‘2 Baba,’ previously linked to the killing of the Divisional Police Officer, SP Bako Angbashin, in Odumude community, Ahoada East LGA in September 2023.
According to a community member, the suspected cultists reportedly stormed the area around 1 a.m. on Sunday, resulting in the tragic deaths of two of his brothers and another individual within his compound.
The source who spoke on condition of anonymity explained that five persons were killed in the community.
According to the source, the cultists also demanded the release of some chiefs in the custody of the police before they would cease fire.
The native called on the state government and security agencies to do more to arrest the wanted cultists as they were living in fear.
He said, “We were all in the room around 1.02 a.m. on Sunday when we heard footsteps and dogs started backing.
“One of my younger brothers came out and shouted who are those people. They replied that they had come to kill everybody.
“So my younger brother was trying to plead with them, they shot him, passed two doors in my house and shot my two other brothers. ”
He added, “They went to another compound, shot another person and went into the village and shot my family member. So five persons were killed. That was what happened.
“We are tired of crying about what is happening. It is like the government doesn’t know what to do. Let the government put more effort and help and set us free from these people because we are in pain.
“One of the people they killed is called Obobula also known as Bestman. Another person is Chibogu.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the state police command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, promised to get across to the Divisional Police Officer and give our correspondent feedback.
