Election Observers and a Coalition of Civil Societies have commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agents for their high level of professionalism during the recently concluded governorship election in Bayelsa state. The observers highlighted that their conduct contributed to the smooth and fair execution of the poll.
Comrade Harvart Ededey, Director of the Total Care For Peace and Development Initiative, representing the observer’s group, spoke to newsmen shortly after the announcement of Governor Douye Diri, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as the winner. Ededey specifically praised the security agencies deployed for the elections, noting their professionalism.
He particularly acknowledged the bravery of security personnel in Yenagoa Ward 5 Unit 20, where they successfully recovered ballot boxes and other materials snatched by political thugs without any loss of life.
In addition to congratulating the winner, the observers and the coalition of civil societies commended Bayelsans for not only voting for their preferred candidates but also for actively defending their votes against any perceived election malpractices.
Meanwhile, seven political parties that participated in the election extended their congratulations to the PDP candidate and incumbent Governor, Senator Douye Diri.
Hon. Tari Edwin, the State Chairman of the Action Democratic Party, spoke to reporters, describing the election as one of the most peaceful governorship elections in recent times. He commended the electoral umpire for boldly cancelling areas where the Bimodal Voter Accreditation system (BVAS) was not utilized.
Hon. Edwin urged all contestants to embrace the results and collaborate with the Governor in fulfilling his campaign promises for the benefit of all Bayelsans and residents.
Victor Fisi, the State Chairman of the Accord Party, expressed dissatisfaction with political parties that criticized the electoral umpire after losing elections. He congratulated INEC for their efforts in ensuring a smooth election devoid of manipulation or bypassing the BVAS.
