In an unwavering stance against violence against women and girls, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State is dedicated to eradicating this menace, as stated by his Special Assistant on Women Affairs, Mrs. Chinwe Onyeukwu.
During a human rights training session in Umuahia, the state capital, focusing on “Ending Violence Against Women” (EVAWG), Onyeukwu underscored the governor’s commitment to channelling investments, resources, policies, and systems towards safeguarding survivors.
She emphasized the initiation of various initiatives and policies by the state government aimed at strengthening police capacity and accountability. Onyeukwu urged the public to support the collective efforts of the police and other stakeholders in combating violence against women and girls, emphasizing the need for accountability and justice for survivors.
“The police play a crucial role in preventing and responding to EVAWG. Their presence can act as a deterrent, and swift responses are vital for ensuring justice,” stated Onyeukwu. However, she acknowledged challenges such as resource limitations, training gaps, coordination issues, and a trust deficit between the police and the community, hindering their effectiveness in addressing this critical issue.
Highlighting the seriousness of EVAWG, Onyeukwu called for attention, collaboration, and unwavering commitment from all quarters.
In her opening remarks, the Executive Director of Vision Spring Initiatives, Mrs. Ngozi Nwosu-Juba, shared the organization’s efforts in multiple interventions to end violence against women and girls in the state.
Nwosu-Juba called upon everyone to unite with the organization and others in putting an end to violence against women and girls, emphasizing the collective responsibility in creating a safer society.
The Commissioner of Police, Abia, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, represented by CSP Leticia Onwuchekwa, expressed gratitude to the partners for their support, presentation, and kind gestures to the command. He assured the police’s commitment to fulfilling its mandate in ensuring the safety of women and girls in the state.
