- Kaduna State forms a task force for the 2024 Hajj to address shortcomings and improve arrangements for pilgrims’ welfare
- Despite the task force initiative, concerned staff call for a forensic investigation into finances and operations of the pilgrims’ board
The Kaduna State government has established a special task force to oversee the 2024 Hajj and address the challenges experienced by the state pilgrims in Saudi Arabia last year. The eight-member task force, chaired by Sheikh Salisu Abubakar, was inaugurated by Deputy Governor Dr. Hadiza Balarabe to rectify gaps and enhance arrangements prioritizing the welfare of pilgrims. Concerns raised by concerned staff of the State Pilgrims Welfare Board have led to calls for a forensic investigation into the board’s finances, procurements, and contracts.
The decision to form the task force comes in response to criticisms of the state’s 2023 Hajj operation by Emir of Zazzau Ahmad Nuhu Bamalli, who described it as a total failure, citing hardships faced by Kaduna pilgrims and the chaotic evacuation process. The challenges included allegations against the Executive Secretary of the Kaduna State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Dr. Yusuf Yakubu Arrigasiyyu, regarding renting 1,400-bed spaces in a distant location from the holy mosque.
The terms of reference for the committee highlight crucial areas requiring attention, such as engaging only organizations meeting specified standards, ensuring accommodations meet required capacity and proximity to the Kaaba, maintaining standard feeding quality, and implementing hadaya services and efficient transportation. The task force includes members like Baba Ahmed-Rufai (Secretary), Imam Buhari, Maimuna Waziri, Aminu Kasimu, Prof. Muhammadu Mustapha-Gwadabe, AVM Muhammad Rabiu Dabo (rtd), and Ummakhukthum Jibril-Maigwari.
While the task force aims to improve pilgrimage operations, concerns about financial transparency and leadership integrity within the pilgrims’ board persist, prompting calls for a thorough investigation.
