In anticipation of the forthcoming governorship election in Ondo State in 2024, leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) hailing from the Southern Senatorial District have formally called for the zoning of the party’s gubernatorial ticket to the south.

This demand was a key resolution reached during a stakeholders’ meeting held over the weekend in Okitipupa. Additionally, the leaders reached a consensus that Ondo South should produce a unified candidate for the upcoming electoral contest.

A communique, signed on behalf of the PDP leaders from the southern senatorial district by Adeolu Akinseye, expressed their determination to secure the governorship position and provide relief to the people. The statement affirmed their commitment to collaborating with other crucial stakeholders in the state to ensure that Ondo South emerges as the source of the next elected governor.

The communique outlined their intent to present a singular, credible, and widely accepted candidate from Ondo South for the upcoming election. It further emphasized the leaders’ resolve to overcome past grievances and animosities, fostering a renewed winning spirit within the party.

Notably, the current governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, hails from the Northern Senatorial District, succeeding former Governor Olusegun Mimiko, who governed the state for eight years and is from the Central Senatorial District. As the political landscape evolves, the call for zoning reflects the party’s strategy to balance regional representation and address the aspirations of the Southern Senatorial District in the upcoming election.
