  • The DSS, led by Director-General Yusuf Bichi, unveils plans to produce UAVs and AK-47s internally, aiming for self-reliance and cost savings
  • Bichi emphasizes the strategic advantage of internal production, pledging DSS support for research and development, and urges constructive engagement in governance

The Department of State Services (DSS) has unveiled ambitious plans to initiate the production of its own Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, alongside manufacturing AK-47s and other weapons. These weapons are intended for internal use and potential sale to other agencies.

Yusuf Bichi, the Director-General of the secret police, revealed this groundbreaking initiative during the graduation ceremony of the Executive Intelligence Management Course (EIMC) 16 participants in Abuja. Bichi asserted that the DSS aims to be self-reliant, emphasizing, “We shall start producing what we eat and eating what we produce.”

The DG highlighted that the DSS would soon unveil weapons, including UAVs, produced by its personnel, which would be deployed across the country. He expressed the intention to reduce reliance on foreign countries for weapons, thereby saving the nation substantial resources allocated for such procurements.

Bichi stated, “We are producing our own AK-47. When we reach the destination, we will save the country from the pains of the resources being chunked out to buy such weapons.” The announcement was made in the presence of Vice President Kashim Shettima, Ooni of Ife Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Femi Otedola, and other notable Nigerians.

To underscore the importance of this initiative, Bichi assured continued support for research and development, emphasizing the strategic advantage of producing assets internally. He also pledged the DSS’s commitment to providing other security agencies with credible intelligence, expressing gratitude to the military and police for their collaboration in combating terrorism and insurgency.

While urging residents of Plateau and Kaduna to shift hostilities towards job creation, Bichi emphasized the need to restore these regions to their former states of prosperity. He cited examples of other regions successfully converting hostilities into economic opportunities and encouraged dialogue and focus for the development and security of Plateau.

Additionally, Bichi called on Nigerians to refrain from disparaging their leaders, advocating for patience and dialogue within the democratic framework. He emphasized that constructive engagement is essential for achieving national development and progress.
