- Abdulsalam Abdulkarim Zaura, APC candidate for Kano central senatorial district, expresses confidence in APC’s victory in potential fresh elections
- Zaura attributes APC’s previous defeat in Kano to currency swap and fuel scarcity, believing voters have recognized their mistakes
Abdulsalam Abdulkarim Zaura, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Kano central senatorial district in the 2023 election, expressed confidence that the APC would emerge victorious if fresh elections were conducted in the state. Zaura asserted that the voters, who were misled into supporting the opposition New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), have realized their mistakes and are now regretting their actions.
During the last general election, APC faced defeats in the presidential, governorship, and many national and state legislative seats, losing ground to the newly formed NNPP in Kano. Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Zaura attributed APC’s poor performance to the consequences of currency swap and fuel scarcity during the 2023 general election.
Zaura highlighted the hardships imposed on the people by these policies of the APC-led government, which turned voters against the ruling party. He pointed to the Naira swap policy as a significant factor, stating that changing the color of the Naira led to a scarcity of the currency, making it difficult for people to access money for their daily needs.
He said, “You defaced money and you put people in serious hardship and you expect them to go for the same party? At that same time, people slept in petrol stations and near ATM machines just to get money. And then the opposition will come out and tell them this is APC. Do you still want to vote for APC? No.”
Despite these challenges, Zaura remains optimistic about APC’s prospects in Kano, asserting that if a vote were cast tomorrow, the APC would emerge as the winner. He attributed the setbacks in Kano to orchestrated actions aimed at Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, suggesting that the changes in the Naira were targeted at hindering Tinubu’s chances in the elections.
Zaura concluded by emphasizing that the people of Kano have now realized the consequences of their choices and that APC remains a formidable force in the state.
