Soyinka: I will comment on Tinubu’s govt performance but…

Nigerian leading playwright and elder statesman Prof Wole Soyinka, says he won’t bare his mind yet on how President Bola Tinubu has performed so far in handling the affairs of the nation.

He disclosed that he would share his sentiment and observation about Tinubu’s administration after one year into his tenure in May 2024.

Soyinka, a Nobel Laureate, made the disclosure on Sunday when he paid a courtesy visit to Tinubu, who is holidaying in Lagos.

The quintessential dramatist said that the one-year delay gives the President enough time to “make up” for lost grounds.

He noted that the grace period was his personal policy, and he’s been consistent with it across successive administration.

“Well, you know, something you may have noticed about me is that most heads of state, when they take office, I always leave them alone for about the first year…Because they need time.

“I know when they come in, they don’t start from ground zero. They often start even lower than ground zero and they have to make up.

“So, I’m adopting the same principle this time. When you see me next year, ask the same question again and listen to my answer,” he explained.
