- Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama refutes media reports on Pope Francis approving blessings for same-gender couples, calling them untrue and mischievous disinformation
- Kaigama asserts the Pope’s unwavering stance, attributing the misinformation to deliberate efforts to sow confusion within the Catholic Church
During the Christmas Mass at Our Lady Queen of Nigeria Catholic Pro-Cathedral in Abuja, Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama clarified recent media reports claiming that Pope Francis had approved blessings for same-gender couples, branding them as untrue and mischievous disinformation.
Dispelling the rumours in his sermon, Kaigama emphasized that the Pope had not, and would never, sanction blessings for same-gender couples. He labelled the reports as part of a deliberate campaign by enemies of the Catholic Church to sow confusion among its members, asserting that the Church’s position on this matter remained steadfast and unchanged.
“As the Pope’s representative here, any such approval or directive would reach me first, and I would convey the message to the brethren,” Kaigama asserted. He attributed the misinformation to the efforts of individuals spending considerable sums to undermine the Church, emphasizing their repeated failures.
Encouraging Christians not to be disheartened by these attacks, Kaigama asserted that evil could not triumph over good, likening the situation to darkness being unable to overcome light.
Addressing the prevailing insecurity in the country, Kaigama urged Christians to maintain faith and prayers, assuring them that the challenges would soon be overcome. He specifically called on those involved in criminal activities, such as the kidnapping of Catholic priests, to refrain from such actions to avoid divine retribution.
In his prayers, Kaigama sought divine intervention for Nigeria and its leaders, urging the Federal Government to intensify security measures to curb the rising crime rates and bring criminals to justice.
The Archbishop underscored the significance of Christmas as a season of peace, love, care, change, and new beginnings. He encouraged Christians to embody Christ’s principles during this time, fostering a sense of unity and goodwill.
