- Aiyedatiwa survived an impeachment plot by Akeredolu’s allies in the Ondo State House of Assembly and stark opposition by his late principal’s foot soldiers.
- The late governor returned to Nigeria in September following a three-month medical leave in Germany and refused to travel to Akure, the Ondo State capital to resume office.
Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the acting governor of Ondo, has arrived at the governor’s office for his oath of office as the state governor, just 24 hours after the death of his boss.
Following the passing of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu earlier on Wednesday, Aiyedatiwa will take the oath of office as governor of Ondo State.
Unless there is a last-minute change of plans, Aiyedatiwa will be sworn in by Justice Olusegun Odusola, the state chief judge, in Akure.
In the state capital of Akure, commissioners, assistants, and visitors have already taken their seats for the swearing-in event inside the Cocoa Hall of the governor’s office.
Aiyedatiwa’s walk to becoming the governor of Ondo State was a long one that lasted one year since Akeredolu suffered health challenges before he eventually succumbed to the claws of death on Wednesday in faraway Germany where he was being treated for prostate cancer.
Aiyedatiwa survived an impeachment plot by Akeredolu’s allies in the Ondo State House of Assembly and stark opposition by his late principal’s foot soldiers.
Controversy enveloped the politics of the state in the last few months with activists and constitutional lawyers calling on Akeredolu to transmit power to Aiyedatiwa in line with the 1999 Constitution.
