The Katsina State government has disclosed that it allocates a daily subsidy of at least N6 million to facilitate reduced transportation fares for its citizens. Haruna Musa, the General Manager of the Katsina State Transport Service Authority (KSTSA), shared this insight in an interview at his office.
KSTSA operates both inter and intra-state services, covering the northern states and all 34 local government areas within Katsina State. Musa outlined that the substantial daily subsidy, amounting to approximately N180 million monthly, is aimed at reducing transportation costs for the public.
The general manager highlighted that an average of 5,382 passengers benefit from the fare reductions daily. He provided an example, stating that for trips to Abuja, KSTSA charges N6,000, while other transport services charge N9,000 for the same route. Given that the buses accommodate 18 passengers each, and about 30 to 35 vehicles are deployed daily for the Abuja route from the main depot, the financial implications are significant.
Musa emphasized that the fare reductions are part of the efforts made by the transport authority to adhere to the directive of Governor Umar Dikko Radda. The goal is to ensure that the public enjoys substantial reductions in transportation costs, making travel more affordable for the citizens of Katsina State.
