Umar Sadiq’s spectacular goal for Real Sociedad against Osasuna has earned him a nomination for the Spanish La Liga Goal of The Month Award for December.
Returning to action after a prolonged absence due to injury, Sadiq marked his comeback on November 26 with a stunning 25-yard strike against Sevilla, contributing to Real Sociedad’s 2-1 victory. This goal marked his first for the team since September 3, 2022.
Competing for the coveted award, Sadiq’s goal is pitted against Brahim Diaz’s strike against Villarreal and Aitor Ruibal’s against Real Madrid.
Sadiq, part of Jose Peseiro’s 41-man provisional squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, is likely to secure a spot in the final squad. The 26-year-old faces competition from fellow strikers, including Victor Osimhen, Victor Boniface, Cyriel Dessers, Emmanuel Dennis, Terem Moffi, and Paul Onuachu.
Former Super Eagles coach, Samson Siasia, has voiced his support for Sadiq, backing him to play a crucial role for Nigeria in the upcoming AFCON tournament. Siasia believes that Sadiq should be a focal point in Peseiro’s strike force, emphasizing the player’s talent and form.
“Sadiq (Umar) is very good,” Siasia stated in an interview with Africa Interviews. “They need to give him a chance and give him the kind of confidence he needs. Then he’s going to surprise. We see him playing in his club, and he’s doing very well. He can do the same thing here (with the Eagles team).”
As the La Liga Goal of The Month Award beckons, Sadiq’s prowess on the field positions him not only as a contender for individual honors but also as a potential key player for Nigeria on the continental stage.
