Former President Buhari Advocates Youth Investment To End Drug Abuse

The former president said the issue of drug abuse must be collectively addressed.

In order to address the problem of drug abuse in the nation, former President Muhammadu Buhari has advocated for more funding to be allocated to youths.

Speaking on Sunday, Buhari was part of a one-day discussion at the government house in Katsina on “Tackling the menace of drug abuse among youth.”

According to the former president, drug abuse is a problem that needs to be tackled jointly.

In order to reduce drug usage among young people in the state, he continued, poverty and a lack of opportunities must be addressed.

“I am pleased to be here today not only as the former president but as a concerned citizen of Katsina state who is deeply interested in addressing the pressing issues of drug abuse among our youths,” Buhari said.

“The numbers we have had paint a big picture of how drug abuse is affecting our youth. However, we must address this challenge and remove the menace from our society.

“Our youths represent our beloved assets and protecting their welfare is crucial to our nation’s future.

“We must not turn away from this self-inflicting issue of our youth. We need to confront this issue collectively with determination.

“Our youths are the future administrators of this state. Your potential is immense but it cannot be realised if too many of you succumb to drug addiction.

“Believe in yourself, your abilities, and your future. I know the challenges we face are many, it is in view of this, we would work together to offer you the support and opportunities needed to renounce drugs.

“Leaders, educators and policymakers lead with the profession and set an example by investing in your youth, providing education, employment and social support.

“Collaborate on prevention, treatment and re-integration strategies for those with an addiction. This is not a challenge one person or group can tackle alone.

“We all have a role in curbing drug abuse, let’s stand together for the sake of our youth and the prosperity of our state.

“Law enforcement agencies, increase efforts against drug trafficking and distribution, to do that, we must address the underlying causes of drug abuse like poverty and lack of opportunities.

“I am not here only to speak, I am committed to supporting Katsina state. I ask everyone to leverage their respective influence and necessary sources, policies and programs to fight this challenge.”
