Liberia’s National Elections Commission (NEC) has conferred an honorary title and tribute upon Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The ceremonial dedication of a workspace for staff marked the occasion, with Professor Yakubu presiding over the event at the invitation of Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah, the Chairperson of NEC-Liberia.
Addressing the gathering in Monrovia, the capital of Liberia, Madam Lansanah acknowledged the instrumental technical support provided by Nigeria’s INEC in establishing the dedicated workspace and fortifying the electoral process in Liberia. She expressed Liberia’s NEC’s gratitude for the indispensable contributions made by Prof Yakubu and INEC in sustaining Liberia’s democratic journey.
Madam Lansanah highlighted Prof Yakubu’s role as the President of the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC), underscoring his advocacy for resource-sharing among regional Electoral Management Bodies (EMBs). She commended his influential efforts, which led to Liberia’s election as the First Vice President of ECONEC in 2021, expressing gratitude for his unwavering support of NEC-Liberia in various regional initiatives.
In response, Prof Yakubu expressed appreciation to NEC-Liberia for the esteemed honor conferred upon INEC-Nigeria through the dedication of the workspace. He acknowledged the value of this resource in enhancing the operational capabilities of staff, particularly in the realm of IT facilities.
Reflecting on past collaborations, Prof Yakubu recalled INEC-Nigeria’s assistance during Liberia’s 2017 presidential election, further solidifying the bond between the electoral bodies of the two nations.
