Renowned political economy professor and management expert, Professor Patrick Utomi, has sharply criticized Nigeria’s legislature, labeling it a “rubber stamp” passively observing the country’s aimless drift.
Utomi made these remarks following his condolences to the family of the late 8th Speaker of the National Assembly, Ghali Umar Na’Abba, during his visit to Kano.
Expressing his concerns, Utomi stated, “Late Honourable Ghali Umar Na’Abba represents all Nigerians at a time when we should have an independent legislature aligning government policy with service to the people. Today, we don’t have a legislature. We have rubber stamp legislatures that are watching the country drift aimlessly, offering no alternatives.”
Highlighting Na’Abba’s impactful tenure, Utomi emphasized, “Honourable Ghali Na’Abba did offer that when he was the Speaker of the National Assembly. We collaborated with him from civil society, standing by him to ensure a working system. Many years later, as we witnessed the drift, we realized the need to create a different path to save the country.”
Utomi’s critique reflects the widespread concern about the current state of Nigeria’s legislative body and the urgent call for a more proactive and independent approach. The professor’s desire is to channel the spirit of the late Na’Abba into a rallying point for the reconstruction of Nigeria for the benefit of all citizens.
