The Labour Party (LP) has asserted that Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former Presidential spokesman to ex-presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, has always been aligned with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The National Publicity Secretary of the LP, Mr. Obiora Ifoh, conveyed this message in response to Okupe’s resignation.

Okupe, in a letter dated January 8, 2024, officially tendered his resignation from the LP. Mr. Ifoh, speaking on Monday, acknowledged receiving the resignation letter through social media but noted that it had not been officially received.

Ifoh expressed well wishes for Okupe’s political career, highlighting Okupe’s contributions during his tenure as the chairman of the DG of the campaign. He emphasized that Okupe’s departure is understandable, as he identifies as a Liberal Democrat while the Labour Party aligns with Social Democracy.

“It is also a good thing because he is not expected to be in a territory where his ideological bent will be confused or different. He has always been a PDP man, so the Labour Party expects that he will return to anywhere he wants to be,” said Ifoh.

It is recalled that Okupe’s previous resignation on December 21, 2022, as Peter Obi’s Campaign Director due to a corruption conviction. Following his money laundering conviction, Okupe paid a fine of N13 million, replacing him as DG of the LP’s Presidential Campaign Council.

Dr. Doyin Okupe, who once served as the National Publicity Secretary of the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC) and faced detention under General Sani Abacha, has had a varied political journey. Despite his stint as a governorship aspirant of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, the Labour Party firmly affirms his historical affiliation with the PDP.
