Former Governor of Kano State, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has called upon the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to graciously accept the verdict of the Supreme Court in the ongoing legal tussle over the Kano gubernatorial election.

Speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Shekarau emphasized the importance of respecting the judicial process and urged political parties to maintain civility despite the adversarial nature of politics.

The former governor, known for his commitment to peaceful politics, highlighted that no amount of abuses, hatred, or hate speeches could alter the outcome of the legal proceedings or grant absolute power.

The legal battle revolves around the clash between Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the APC’s Gawuna since the governorship election in March of the previous year. Governor Yusuf has faced legal challenges, with the Tribunal and Appeal court decisions impacting his position. Currently, he is contesting his removal before the Supreme Court.

Shekarau emphasized his belief in the democratic process and the need for parties to approach disputes civilised with evidence of malpractice. He advocated adherence to the court’s decisions, stating that once the Supreme Court reaches a verdict, the NNPP and the APC should embrace it and prioritize peace.

The seasoned politician underscored that engaging in abusive language and hate speeches would not alter the outcome but could jeopardize the peaceful transition of power. As the legal proceedings unfold, Shekarau encourages a commitment to civility and respect for the rule of law, emphasizing the importance of preparing for future elections rather than dwelling on past disputes.
