- Peter Obi calls on President Tinubu to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the scandal involving Minister Betta Edu’s suspension
- Obi emphasizes the need for urgent and effective measures to address public sector corruption and hold all responsible parties accountable
Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has called on President Bola Tinubu to thoroughly investigate the alleged scandal involving the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu.
In a statement posted on his social media platform on Thursday, Obi welcomed the suspension of Edu but emphasized the need for a more comprehensive inquiry beyond mere suspension. He urged the government to address public sector corruption urgently and effectively.
Expressing disappointment, Obi highlighted the misuse of the ministry meant to attend to the needs of the suffering masses, turning it into a channel for stealing from the poor. He stressed the importance of holding all those involved accountable for their actions.
Obi stated, “I like to add my voice with most Nigerians concerned about accountability in government and judicious use of public funds to welcome the suspension of Edu and subsequent directives for her investigation. The investigation must be comprehensive so that all those guilty are brought to book.”
Cautious not to trivialize the matter, Obi insisted that the suspension should not be a merely symbolic action but a step towards holding all responsible parties accountable. He drew attention to the alleged misappropriation of funds in the ministry, expressing concern about the severe suffering among the people meant to benefit from poverty alleviation funds.
Highlighting the immorality and insensitivity of diverting such funds meant for public welfare, Obi called on the Tinubu administration to initiate a thorough system-wide investigation into reported fraud and corruption cases among high government officials.
President Tinubu suspended Edu on Monday following controversies surrounding financial transactions she authorized in her ministry. The suspension came with immediate effect, addressing concerns about the approval of substantial payments into private accounts of civil servants and the alleged misuse of funds meant for vulnerable Nigerians.
Obi’s call for a robust investigation aligns with the growing demand for accountability and transparency in the Nigerian government.
