Brown Ideye, a former international and 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner emphasized the significance of captain Ahmed Musa and Kenneth Omeruo in leading the Super Eagles to victory at the 2023 AFCON.

Speaking during a media interaction on X (formerly known as Twitter), Ideye expressed his belief that the present Super Eagles squad lacks discipline and passion, suggesting that they should learn from the experiences of Musa and Omeruo, who played pivotal roles in winning the 2013 edition.

“We have players, but we don’t have a team. This team lacks discipline and passion for the country. I’m not sure they can win in Cote d’Ivoire,” Ideye remarked.

Advocating for a gathering with Musa and Omeruo, Ideye highlighted the need for the younger players to understand the discipline, sacrifices, and determination that led to victory in 2013.

He also urged against excluding older players like Musa and Omeruo, emphasizing their leadership qualities and the need for respect from the younger players.

“We push out our players early. Ronaldo is still playing for Portugal; why should Ahmed Musa be left out of this AFCON? Musa and Omeruo are the oldest players on the team and only the two players from the last squad that won the AFCON. These are the leaders we need on the team. The younger players must be respectful to follow their leadership,” Ideye added.

Ideye also advocated for including players from the local league, drawing parallels with the successful 2013 campaign where quality players from the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) played pivotal roles.
