- Otunba Segun Sowunmi criticizes Edo Governor Obaseki for allegedly sidelining and driving out authentic PDP members, impacting the party’s legacy
- Sowunmi calls for the restoration of PDP’s influence in Edo, urging Obaseki to relinquish control and respect party stakeholders’ contributions
Otunba Segun Sowunmi, a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and former Spokesman for Atiku Abubakar’s 2019 Presidential Campaign, has voiced his disapproval of recent developments within the Edo State chapter of the party. Sowunmi accuses Governor Godwin Obaseki, who borrowed the PDP platform, of attempting to drive out authentic party members.
In an interview with newsmen, Sowunmi expressed concern that Obaseki’s involvement in the party has led to a decline in membership and elective positions, undermining the PDP’s 25-year legacy in Edo.
Sowunmi emphasized the importance of restoring the PDP to its genuine stakeholders, urging Governor Obaseki to relinquish control for the benefit of those who have tirelessly contributed to the party’s growth.
He stated, “The PDP must reclaim its influence in Edo; those who borrowed our platform cannot expel those who have toiled and sacrificed for the PDP. We gave him the responsibility to manage the membership registration. Compare what he did to what Yahya Bello did for the APC. We lent you our platform and want it back, QED!”
Sowunmi pointed out discrepancies in Obaseki’s allegiance to the party, questioning the governor’s commitment to the PDP and its members. He expressed frustration, stating, “Suddenly PDP, a legacy of 25 solid years, will become a party that stands for nothing. Show me evidence of how Obaseki cares for our party or our members. Extremely annoying. You had a problem with Oshiomhole, ran to us, treated our people poorly, and now they must become extinct for you? Where is that done?”
