- Senator Kabiru Marafa praises President Tinubu for not interfering in recent Supreme Court judgments, safeguarding democracy and upholding justice
- Marafa highlights the historical significance, referencing potential risks to democracy, while IPAC commends Tinubu’s commitment to judicial independence
Senator Kabiru Marafa, an influential figure within the All Progressives Congress (APC), praised President Bola Tinubu’s non-interference in the recent Supreme Court judgments on governorship tussles, hailing it as a positive development that rejuvenates hope in the judiciary and safeguards Nigeria’s democracy.
As the Zamfara State Coordinator of the Campaign Council for President Tinubu and Senator Kashim Shettima during the 2023 general elections, Marafa, in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, lauded Tinubu and the justices of the apex court for allowing the will of Nigerian voters to prevail. He expressed confidence that history would judge them favourably for their commitment to the democratic process.
Marafa highlighted the significance of Tinubu’s hands-off approach, stating, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has, by this singular action of non-interference in the Supreme Court judgment, saved the country’s democracy and forestalled the repeat of the 1983 scenario.” He referenced the collapse of the Second Republic after the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) took control of states formerly held by the opposition.
Drawing parallels to his own experience during the 2019 general elections, Marafa recalled the judiciary’s pivotal role in upholding justice. He urged the governors whose elections were affirmed by the recent Supreme Court rulings to govern with generosity, fairness, and justice.
In a related development, the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) also commended President Tinubu for his commitment to the independence of the judiciary and adherence to the rule of law. Yusuf Dantalle, the National Chairman of IPAC, expressed gratitude for Tinubu’s neutral stance in the legal process, acknowledging the importance of upholding democratic principles.
Marafa’s acknowledgement of Tinubu’s non-interference and IPAC’s commendation reflects a positive perception of the recent Supreme Court judgments, fostering confidence in the judiciary and reinforcing the principles of democracy.
