Gunmen wreaking havoc across the country have struck again in Ekiti State as the nation continues to creak under the sheer weight of unprecedented insecurity.
An unspecified number of passengers have been kidnapped by the gunmen during an ambush on travellers along Ondo-Ekiti boundary.
The incident happened on Saturday between Iju and Ikere-Ekiti along the Akure-Ikere highway.
The kidnappers were said to have attacked the vehicles the passengers were travelling in.
The two vehicles the captives were travelling in, a Toyota Corolla and a white Toyota Highlander, were abandoned at the scene of the incident with none of the occupants present.
The two vehicles had been riddled with bullets upon discovery by other travellers.
According to sources, after the attack on the two vehicles, the travellers were moved into the forest around Iju by their abductors.
The spokesperson of the Ondo State Police Command, Funmi Odunlami, confirmed the incident.
He, however, could not ascertain the number of people involved.
She explained that the anti-kidnapping unit swiftly responded to the incident and has been conducting a thorough search within the Iju forest.
Odunlami added that no official reports had been received from the families of the owners of the two vehicles, and there were no reports of missing individuals in the state
