- NAFDAC launches a narcotic drugs serialization pilot project to track and trace drug products, addressing the issue of drug abuse
- Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye emphasizes the proactive measure, utilizing track and trace technology to combat substandard drugs and falsified medicines
In a move to curb the escalating issue of narcotics abuse in Nigeria, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has introduced robust mechanisms for tracking and tracing narcotic products from production at the manufacturing plant to the end user.
According to a statement released by the agency on Sunday, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director General of NAFDAC, announced the launch of the narcotic drugs serialization pilot project in Lagos.
Prof. Adeyeye emphasized that the initiative is a proactive step aimed at addressing the rampant drug and substance abuse in the country, especially among the youth. Narcotics were specifically singled out as a starting point to combat drug abuse, with plans to extend the approach to all other drug products regulated by NAFDAC.
Highlighting the challenges in the healthcare sector, Prof. Adeyeye underscored the prevalence of substandard and falsified medicines. She expressed concern about the chaotic drug distribution practices of unscrupulous elements who disregard human lives, and she identified the Traceability Project (Track and Trace) as a crucial intervention to counter these malpractices.
Through a scanning device integrated into an Android phone, consumers can now verify the authenticity of the drugs they consume, ensuring the quality and safety of medicines. Prof. Adeyeye emphasized that the track and trace technology also serves as a valuable tool in the event of medication recalls.
Manufacturers are required to commission their registered products into the NAFDAC Traceability System. As the products move through distributors and wholesalers, they undergo scanning using a 2D Data Matrix barcode scanner, capturing essential information about the product’s movement.
Mr. Tunde Odunlami, the Managing Director of GS1 Nigeria, the technical partner in this initiative, reflected on the decade-long journey advocating the importance of traceability. The implementation of these track and trace measures marks a significant stride towards ensuring the safety and authenticity of pharmaceuticals in Nigeria.
