- She disclosed that all efforts to reach the former Rivers governor have proved abortive
The Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Sen. Ireti Kingibe, has said the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has not been forthcoming and proactive in addressing the nagging insecurity in the capital city.
The FCT has been enmeshed in deepening security crisis in recent months with kidnapping for ransom and armed robbery becoming the new normal in the city.
But while speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, the Labour Party (LP) lawmaker said efforts to meet with Wike were rebuffed, adding that there was no synergy between the minister and the elected officials and the residents of the city.
She disclosed that she made several efforts to discuss how to resolve the insecurity in the FCT with the minister without any success.
“I remember a few months ago, I drew the attention of the minister (Wike) – when he came for appropriation – to the fact that security is a priority. And I have been saying that for a long time.
“There is a big disconnect between the Minister of the FCT and the elected officials. I have WhatsApp messages, I have written him one or two letters and I don’t get any response.
“I am the person that people come to with their complaints. Everybody has been at me for not doing anything about the insecurity. The minister (Wike) as far as he is concerned there are no elected members in the FCT.”
The Senator further said she raised an alarm earlier about the security situation in the FCT but was told she was exaggerating.
“A little bit earlier I tried to draw their attention (security operatives) and I was told that it was exaggerated,” she said.
Kingibe, who is currently out of the country, however assured the public that the Senate would invite the FCT minister on the lingering insecurity in the nation’s seat of power
