- Isa Ashiru, the PDP candidate in Kaduna, accepts Supreme Court’s ruling but vows to remain in politics for public service
- Despite setbacks, Ashiru calls for peace, urges supporters to participate in the upcoming by-election scheduled for February 3, 2024
Isa Ashiru, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the March 18, 2023 Governorship election in Kaduna State, declared that he will remain in politics despite the Supreme Court’s ruling affirming Governor Uba Sani’s election.
Speaking at a media briefing in Kaduna on Monday, Ashiru accepted the Supreme Court’s judgment in good faith and extended a hand of fellowship to Governor Uba Sani. He emphasized that his commitment to politics is centred on serving the good people of Kaduna.
The Court of Appeal in Abuja had earlier, on November 24, 2023, unanimously affirmed Uba Sani’s election as Kaduna State governor. The PDP and Ashiru contested the outcome, alleging irregularities and non-compliance with the Electoral Act 2022.
However, the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal on Friday. Despite the setback, Ashiru maintained that he never lost the 2023 governorship election in the state.
Addressing his supporters, the former House of Representatives member urged them to accept the Supreme Court’s verdict and move forward gracefully. He called for law-abiding behaviour and peaceful coexistence among supporters, regardless of their political affiliations.
Ashiru asserted, “I am in politics not for myself but for the good people of Kaduna State. I am on, and I will continue.”
Looking ahead, he encouraged his supporters to participate enthusiastically in the forthcoming by-election scheduled for February 3, 2024, by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Despite the recent events, Ashiru emphasized the PDP’s commitment to peaceful coexistence and urged supporters to remain steadfast in their political engagements.
“We will not be deterred. We still have a by-election on February 3, 2024, and we urge all our supporters to come out and vote. Ours is peaceful co-existence and nothing more. We wish him well,” he added.
