In a successful sting operation, officers from the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT intercepted a large wooden boat suspected to be carrying cannabis sativa along the Lagos waterways. The estimated street value of the seized weed is a staggering N128 million.
The operation, conducted over the weekend at the Ibeju-Lekki waterfront, was executed by naval officers deployed for Operation WATER GUARD. Commodore Kolawole Oguntuga, the Commander of NNS BEECROFT, confirmed the seizure and disclosed that the boat’s owners hastily fled upon sighting the naval gunboat.
Utilizing the Nigerian Navy Maritime Domain Awareness facility, Falcon Eye Alignment, the team tracked the boat’s movement from Badagry until it reached Ibeju-Lekki.
“At the time of the arrest, the boat was laden with 64 bags of cannabis sativa, weighing over 2,500kg,” stated Commodore Oguntuga.
In a separate raid of criminal hideouts around Alaba-Rago, officers intercepted a sack containing over 23 wraps of substances suspected to be derivatives of cannabis sativa, known as SK, on January 14, 2024.
Commending the efforts of the Nigerian Navy Ship BEECROFT, Commodore Oguntuga emphasized its role in curbing the influx of narcotics into the country through Lagos waterways. He underscored the significant connection between drugs, violence, and crime, noting that the seized narcotics were handed over to officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for necessary action.
The interception aligns with the commitment of the Nigerian Navy to combat insecurity, in line with the Strategic Directives of the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla.
