Lagos to discontinue 25% discount on state-owned transport services

Head of corporate communication at the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Kolawole Ojelabi, confirmed that fares will revert to 100 percent on Monday

The Lagos state government has announced the discontinuation of the 25 percent discount on state-owned transport services starting this Sunday.

Head of corporate communication at the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Kolawole Ojelabi, confirmed that fares will revert to 100 percent on Monday.

“The 25% rebate on regulated public transport buses, ferry, and train ends on Sunday, 28th January 2024. From Monday, 29th January 2024, transport fare on regulated transport services return to 100%,” the statement reads.

Initially, on July 31, 2023, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had implemented a 50 percent reduction in transport fares as part of palliative measures to mitigate the impact of petrol subsidy removal and rising commodity prices.

However, in November 2023, the 50 percent rebate was terminated, and a 25 percent discount was subsequently introduced within 24 hours following appeals from residents.
