- Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC) indefinitely postpones local government elections originally scheduled for August 31 due to ongoing court actions
- The decision comes following a court summons related to a case against Nasarawa State House of Assembly and NASIEC
The Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC) has officially announced the indefinite postponement of the local government elections initially scheduled for August 31. The commission’s chairman, Ayuba Usman Wandai, conveyed this decision in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State, citing ongoing court actions as the primary reason for the suspension.
Wandai, addressing members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) and the press, explained that the commission received a court summons from the Federal High Court in Lafia. The summons pertained to a case filed by one Paul A. John and 12 others against the Nasarawa State House of Assembly and NASIEC.
Considering the legal proceedings and their potential impact on the successful conduct of the 2024 local government elections, the commission, in adherence to the law, postponed the exercise indefinitely. Wandai mentioned that the commission has instructed its legal representatives to seek an accelerated hearing of the case to facilitate the resumption of normal election activities.
I didn’t sign any agreement before Supreme Court verdict — Gov Yusuf
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, on Monday, denounced entering any agreement with the Presidency before the January 12, 2024, Supreme Court judgment on the Kano Election Petition where he emerged victorious.
The governor, in a statement by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, described a document already circulating on social media indicating a four-term agreement between the Governor and the presidency as an imaginary piece devoid of all iota of truth.
Bature said: “For emphasis, the rather fake agreement saying Governor Yusuf has accepted to cross carpet to the ruling APC, jettison purported claim to dissolve or allow the five emirates, discontinuing demolition of illegal structures and establishment of Kano Elders Council should be disregarded.
“The Governor would like to make it abundantly clear, that having secured his mandate through popular votes of the good people of Kano, and certified by a fair affirmation of Supreme Court judgment, he would not be intimidated by any political opportunist.
