The Federal Government has unveiled plans to transform the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) into a revenue-generating powerhouse. The Minister of Youth Development, Jamila Bio-Ibrahim, shared this revelation during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics program.

Addressing the question about potential increases in the monthly allowance for corps members, the minister highlighted the government’s commitment to reshaping the NYSC to align with the current dynamics of the nation.

Acknowledging the challenges posed by dwindling resources and reduced oil revenues, Minister Bio-Ibrahim emphasized the pursuit of innovative solutions to ensure the well-being of corps members. She stated, “We’re not oblivious to the fact that resources are tight. However, we’re dedicated to finding inventive ways to safeguard the welfare of our corps members.”

The focal point of the reform revolves around elevating the NYSC beyond its traditional role as a social program. The envisioned transformation positions the NYSC as both a revenue-generating agency and a platform to equip corps members for the competitive job market. The comprehensive approach includes fostering entrepreneurship, facilitating optimal matches for primary assignments, and providing unwavering support throughout their career journeys.

Addressing the heightened security concerns across the nation, Minister Bio-Ibrahim revealed a crucial change in policy. She confirmed that, due to escalating security challenges, corps members would no longer be posted to states deemed unsafe.

“As an immediate government intervention and a proactive step by the NYSC, we have ceased posting corps members to states with significant security risks. This has been an ongoing measure to prioritize the safety of our corps members,” she assured.

Ensuring the security of corps members is recognized as a collaborative effort involving various government agencies. Minister Bio-Ibrahim emphasized the multi-sectoral approach to security matters, stating, “It’s not solely the responsibility of the NYSC and our ministry. We are collaborating with security agencies to guarantee the safety of our corps members.”

This strategic overhaul reflects the government’s commitment to adaptability, financial sustainability, and the safety of those participating in the NYSC program.
