Nigeria manager José Peseiro
  • Nigeria’s coach, José Peseiro, stresses the importance of improving their attacking performance despite having the strongest defense
  • Despite advancing to the semi-finals with a 1-0 win over Angola, Peseiro urges his team to capitalize on offensive opportunities

Nigeria’s manager, José Peseiro, has emphasized the need for his team to be more clinical in front of goals despite boasting the most robust defence at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.

The Super Eagles advanced to the semi-finals following a 1-0 victory over Angola, marking their fourth consecutive clean sheet in the tournament.

Quietly progressing in the CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2023, Nigeria is set to face South Africa in the next stage, with the coach and players eyeing a fourth title for Nigeria.

While acknowledging Nigeria’s defensive prowess, Peseiro stressed the importance of enhancing their attacking performance.

“We maintained our defensive solidity and scored a goal, but we could have been more proactive. The team had opportunities to create more chances,” Peseiro remarked.

With only six goals scored in five games, the Portuguese manager believes Nigeria has not fully capitalized on their offensive quality.

“We possess quality players, and while Angola performed well, we could have been more fortunate. I am content with my players, but I urge us to be more effective,” Peseiro added.

Peseiro acknowledged the injuries challenge to key creators like Iheanacho and Aribo, emphasizing the need for other players to step up.

As Nigeria strives for a fourth AFCON crown, Peseiro recognizes that enhancing their attacking efficiency could be pivotal.

While the Super Eagles have relied on their solid defence to secure results, Peseiro believes rediscovering their scoring touch could propel Nigeria to the summit of African football.
