- Both religious bodies express deep concern over economic hardship, food crisis, and escalating insecurity, call for urgent government intervention
The Jama’atul Nasril Islam (JNI) and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have jointly called on the federal government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and state governors to urgently tackle the issues of inflation, poverty, and insecurity plaguing the nation before they escalate further.
In separate statements, both religious bodies expressed deep concern over the prevailing economic hardship and the escalating food crisis in the country.
Elder Sunday Oibe, the Secretary-General of Northern CAN, highlighted the immense challenges ordinary Nigerians face due to the high cost of food items, transportation, and other essential goods and services. He emphasized that the current situation has made life increasingly difficult for many citizens, especially with the collapse of small businesses due to the erratic power supply and the continuous depreciation of the naira.
CAN pointed out that the escalating insecurity, characterized by frequent killings and kidnappings for ransom, further exacerbates the plight of Nigerians. The group called on the government to take urgent steps to address the dire economic situation and escalating security challenges across the country.
Expressing concern over the recent attacks by bandits in Plateau state and other parts of the country, Northern CAN urged the government to intensify efforts to stop the killings and bring the perpetrators to justice. The group emphasized accountability to ensure lasting peace in the affected regions.
Similarly, the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), through its Secretary-General, Professor Khalid Abubakar, described the current hardships faced by ordinary Nigerians as distressing. The organization urged the federal government to intervene urgently to alleviate the suffering of the people, particularly in the face of food insecurity, inflation, poverty, and insecurity.
As Ramadan approaches, JNI called on the business community to refrain from hoarding essential commodities and urged them to lower prices to make them more affordable for the general populace. The organization emphasized the importance of generosity and kindness, especially during the holy month, and urged Nigerians to emulate the exemplary conduct of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Both religious bodies urged President Tinubu to address these pressing challenges promptly to ensure the well-being and prosperity of all Nigerians.
