  • The Africa Cup of Nations final between Nigeria and Cote d’Ivoire at Ebimpé Stadium promises a thrilling showdown
  • Nigeria and Cote d’Ivoire have a rich history of encounters, with memorable matches in 1994 and 2013 showcasing their rivalry

On Sunday, February 11th, the 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will culminate at the 60,012-seater Olympic Stadium of Ebimpé, featuring a highly anticipated final match between two former champions, the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire. The encounter promises to be a thrilling showdown, showcasing the prowess of these African football powerhouses as they vie for the prestigious trophy.

The clash between Nigeria and Cote d’Ivoire holds significant historical weight, with the two teams having crossed paths on multiple occasions in the past two decades. Out of their eight previous meetings, two encounters stand out as memorable chapters in the annals of Nigerian football.

One such encounter occurred on April 6th, 1994, during a thrilling semi-final showdown at Stade El Menzah in Tunisia. In a match dubbed the ‘final before final,’ Nigeria and Cote d’Ivoire delivered an epic battle culminating in a dramatic penalty shootout. Despite trailing behind, Nigeria showcased resilience and determination, ultimately emerging victorious to secure a spot in the final.

Another memorable clash occurred during the quarter-finals of the 2013 AFCON in South Africa. Against the odds, the Super Eagles clinched a hard-fought victory over the Ivorians, with striker Emmanuel Emenike and midfielder Sunday Mba making significant contributions to Nigeria’s triumph.

As the two teams prepare to face off again in the final, anticipation is running high for a fiercely contested match. While Nigeria secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Cote d’Ivoire in their previous group-stage encounter, the Ivorians seek redemption after a miraculous comeback from the brink of elimination.

With three AFCON titles under their belt, the Super Eagles aim to etch their name in history again by clinching a fourth championship title. Led by star players such as Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, Nigeria boasts a formidable lineup capable of overcoming any challenge.

However, Cote d’Ivoire, buoyed by their remarkable journey to the final, is determined to seize victory and add another trophy to their collection. Spearheaded by standout performers like Sebastien Haller and Franck Kessié, the Elephants pose a formidable threat to Nigeria’s title aspirations.

As football enthusiasts eagerly await the showdown, all eyes will be on the pitch as the Super Eagles and the Elephants vie for continental glory in what promises to be a captivating spectacle.
